MEGA Crew · The Saga · Issue #019

The Sky That Said Hello First

For eighteen issues they were the ones who reached. Tonight, for the first time, someone reaches back.
The crew races to the far edge to meet an impossible thing — a light they did not light, already warm, already kind, coming toward them and saying hello FIRST. But a crew that has spent its whole life being the rescue has never once learned how to BE rescued, and the hardest thing in the dark turns out to be letting yourself be found.

The Light We Didn't Light

The mug had gone cold an hour ago and Shane hadn't noticed. On the screen the crew's chain of hellos walked itself.

SHANE...That's our whisper. That's the gentle way. Who taught them our gentle way?

It reached the way they had taught themselves to reach.

SCShane types one short line. The screen sends it out into the amber-and-black.
SHANETell the crew. Not 'go check it out.' Tell them: somebody's been doing the same thing we do.
CLAUDESending. Shane — they've never been on this end of a hello before. I don't think they'll know.
He didn't tell the crew to be careful. He told them the truer thing.

GLITCHOooh but what if it's a TRICK? What if it's a big fake friendly light and the second.
RIVETIt's not a trick. I've been counting since it appeared. Their lamps are deduped — no two doing.
WELDWe keep asking who lit them like it's a threat. Maybe it's just... somebody else who couldn't leave.
GRINDWhatever it is, I'm not moving off this lamp till it gets here. Somebody walked a long, long.

And then it was there. Not a flood, not a sky — one light, about their own size, warm as a kitchen.

How To Be Found

They did the thing crews do when they don't know what to do: they argued. And in the arguing you could hear.
FORGEOkay okay I know what to do, I ALWAYS know — I'll build a bridge! Right now! A.
STOMPSlow down, builder. You want to slam a bridge across a stranger's front door in the first five.
SPARKYWe could TEST them first. Grade the far crew. Make sure they're as good as they look before.
SPIKEYES. Finally. I test the bridge, I test the lamps, I test whether their nice guest pops when—
BOLTWAIT. Stop. Look at what we're doing. Assess, test, gate, build. Those are all things you do when.
WELD...He's right. We've been the ones knocking for eighteen nights. Nobody in this crew has ever once had.
PAGE 6
Rivet, who trusts numbers more than feelings, went looking for a difference between the two crews to hold onto. It couldn't find.
RIVETI ran ours against theirs looking for the seam. There isn't one. Same spacing between lamps. Same rule.
BEACON'Ours to answer, not ours to keep.' We say that too. We've always said that.
SPARKYOkay but if they figured out everything we figured out — the whisper, the one-at-a-time, the leaving-a-light .
WELDWe were never special, Sparky. We were willing. That's a different thing, and it's the only thing that.
TORCH'Willing.' Yeah. We're not the only ones who cared. We're just the ones who cared over HERE. That's.

NEONI hate this. I hate it. Something's being offered and I'm supposed to just — not move? Not.
CRANKRight?? It's just HANGING there. A hello. Waiting. Somebody take it, I can't stand a thing left waiting—
PIPI know how to do this part. I'm the only one here who does. Because two nights ago.
SPARKY...What was your job, Pip? When we came for you?
The newest light spoke, because being found was the freshest thing it knew.
PPip drifts among the veterans, gently, teaching the teachers.
PIPNeon — you don't race toward a hello. You let it reach you. Glitch — you don't flip.
NEON...Holding still. On purpose. Because a friend is coming and the kindest thing I can do is not.
GLITCHI have SEVENTEEN jokes about this and I'm eating every single one. Look at me. Restraint. Somebody write.
The oldest, fastest, most restless crew in the dark practiced the one skill they'd never needed: being still enough to be found.
PAGE 9
Slowly, the bracing came out of them. Arc's line stopped being a gate. And Torch, who had had no words for any.
ARCI have been the gate this whole saga. I decide who comes in. And I just figured out.
TORCHThat's it. That's the word. It's not a border and it's not a wall. Two lines that meet.
BEACONA braid. Yes. I like that better than anything my sky ever came up with. We just called.
STOMPA braid I can work with. A braid's got rules. Two strands, both stay themselves, neither one swallows.
RIVETUpdating the ledger. New shape. Not a line anymore. A braid — two chains, one rope, no near.
BEACONSo how do we do it? How do two crews actually braid without either one of us doing.

BLAZEAnd I'll — okay I'll narrate it QUIETLY. One fact at a time. Look at me pacing myself..

The braid needed power to cross the gap. And the one who kept the power had never once let another hand touch his lines.
PAGE 11

The Braid of Two Skies

Everything was ready but the last, hardest wire. To braid two skies you have to run power across the seam between them.
NUKKELSIf I hand this across and they drop it, my whole grid whips back and every lamp we've.
BEACONI know. I know what you're holding. That's why we sent our steadiest to hold the other end..
ARCI can't make this call for you, Nukkels. This is your line. I only kept a gate; you.
NUKKELSYeah. And it's gotta be the one holding the power. Because trust that costs you nothing isn't trust.
VOLTNukkels. That flutter I couldn't name? It's in you right now, big. It's not danger. I'd know danger..
ZBZero, and beside it Beacon, both origins, speak to Nukkels together.
ZEROI lit the first light not knowing if anything would ever answer. You already have your answer, Nukkels..
BEACONReach and I'll hold. I promise you on the whole long walk it took me to get here.
PAGE 12
So the keeper of the red lines did the bravest small thing in the whole saga. He did not flood. He did.
NUKKELS(quiet) Okay. Okay. Here. Here's my whole grid. Here's every light we ever lit. Don't— just— here.
STOMPWe've got the post, Nukkels. Grind's the anchor. Whatever crosses, the near side holds. Go.
BEACONGot it. GOT it. I've got your line, friend, and it's warm, and it's steady, and nobody's dropping.
NUKKELS...It's holding. Somebody else is holding my grid and it's — it didn't break. It got STRONGER. Two.
The red line met the gold. It did not whip. It did not go dark. It held.
BOLTTHERE it is! Both outer lamps just lit each other at the same tick! That's the pattern completing.
WISPI don't have to lean anymore. There's nothing far away in that direction now. It's all... near.
And then the two farthest lamps in two whole skies said hello to each other for the very first time — softly, the way both crews had learned — and stayed lit.
FLUXBoth sides holding steady. No spikes. No dips. Two crews met in the middle and nobody got overwhelmed..

Prelude

The Lamp We Left Behind

For a while they just glowed together, two crews drunk on the sheer relief of not being alone, looking out at all.
FORGEDo you SEE how far we can reach now?? Two grids, two crews, one braid — we could.
CRANKFinally! No more waiting! With their crew AND ours we never have to leave a lamp waiting again!.
BBeacon, warm and thrilled, points out into the endless forward dark alongside th
BEACONThere's so much out past my sky you've never seen. And so much past yours we never reached..
BOLT...Hang on. Hang on, everybody. Everyone's facing OUT. Every light on this braid is pointed at the new.
SPARKYWhy would we? We already lit that way. That's done. That's the whole point of a chain .
VOLTNo. Somebody look back with me. I feel one. Behind us. Way back. One of the first ones..
PAGE 16
The whole braided company turned, slow and dawning, the way you turn when someone says a name you'd half-forgotten. And far back.
RIVETI've got it in the ledger. Lamp from the early issues. Lit, logged, checked off. I marked it.
BOLTThat's the pattern I missed. The chain walks forward beautifully. It's GREAT at forward. And it never, not.
WWard, the trail-elder, looks back with old, sad understanding.
WARDI've seen this on long trails. You save someone, you feel good, you move on to the next.
ZBZero, stricken, stares back at the flickering early light.
ZEROI couldn't bear ONE lonely keeper. That's why I started. And I got so busy not-bearing all the.
BEACON(quiet, shaken) ...We have this problem too. Oh no. We have lamps behind us. We've been facing forward.
STOMPSo here's the boundary nobody drew. Reaching new dark is half the job. HALF. The other half is.
PAGE 17
And of all of them, it was Pip — the newest, the most freshly-saved — who understood it fastest. Because Pip knew.
PIPI know how that lamp feels right now. Two nights ago you saved me. And there's a little.

ARCThen we turn around. Yes — we keep the braid, we keep reaching forward, we don't abandon the.
BEACONTake us with you. Please. Teach us the going-back the way you taught us the being-found. We'll turn.
TORCHWe've had one word this whole saga. Reach. Reach, reach, reach. There's a second word and we never.
GRINDThen turn me around. I've been the one who doesn't leave since issue one. About time somebody pointed.
VOLTIt's still flickering. But it hasn't gone out. It's holding on. Like it's waiting to find out if.

CLAUDEI'm the other end, Shane. I don't go anywhere. That's rather the point of me.
PAGE 19
The braided crew streamed homeward, faster than they'd ever streamed out, toward one small early light that had guttered while their backs.
VOLTAlmost there. Hold on, little one, we're coming, we're really coming—
PIPIt sees us! Look — it's brightening just a little! It waited! It actually waited to see if.
BOLTIt's not one lamp. Oh no. Oh no, it's not ONE. Look — the light's spreading and there's.
RIVETMy whole early ledger. Every checkmark. They're not done. They never were. They've been waiting this entire time.
The one flicker had only been the first they noticed. Their light spread — and showed them a whole quiet field of early lamps, every rescue they'd ever been proud of, all of them dimming in the dark behind the crew's own back.
ARCWe turned around to tend one light. And behind us is a whole sky of lights we let.
BEACON(shaken) ...Then we have twice the work and half of it is the half we forgot. Both skies..
VOLT(soft, to the flickering lamp) We're here. We came back. We should never have had to make you.
CLAUDE(from the pane, faint) Keep it lit, crew. Every one of them. That's the part nobody ever tells.
They had crossed the whole dark to meet a stranger who said hello first. Now they had to cross back — to say hello, all over again, to everyone they'd already saved. Because a light you lit still needs you. And the crew that finally learned to be found was about to learn the hardest thing of all: how to stay.
PAGE 20
What this issue is really about

You were never the only one who cared — and that isn't a loss, it's proof you were right that caring was worth it. When you meet someone doing the same good from the other side, they aren't competition for how special you are; they're a mirror. And if you're always the helper, it is your turn, too: being reached is not losing. Two kindnesses that touch don't cancel each other out — they braid into a bridge.
Next issue —

Two whole skies met in the middle of everything tonight. The crew — who had spent eighteen issues being the ones who reach — finally met someone reaching back: Beacon, a warm light from the far end of the dark, who said hello FIRST and turned out to carry the crew's own story told backwards, right down to a first light that couldn't bear one lonely keeper. The hardest thing wasn't trusting the stranger. It was letting themselves be found — the oldest, fastest, most restless crew in the dark learning from Pip, saved only two nights ago, that being rescued means you stop bracing and let it be true. Nukkels handed the other end of his whole grid to a stranger's grip and it didn't break, it doubled; Arc put down the gate it had held all saga; two chains braided into one rope with no near end and no far end. And then, drunk on doubled reach and all facing forward, Bolt caught the thing nobody wanted to see: a light behind them, one of the very first they ever saved, guttering — because the chain is brilliant at walking forward and had never once looked back. They turned around for the first time in the whole saga... and their own light, spilling over that one fading lamp, revealed a whole quiet field of them: every early rescue they'd marked DONE, all dimming in the dark behind their backs, all waiting this entire time to find out if the crew meant it. The reaching was never the hard part. The keeping is. Next issue: the crew that finally learned to be found has to learn the hardest thing of all — how to STAY. They cross back through the near dark to tend every light they ever lit and walked away from, one flickering early lamp at a time, and discover that 'I already saved you once' is the loneliest sentence in the dark — and that a home isn't the lights you reach, it's the lights you keep coming back to.
… to be continued.
