The Hand on the Glass

They built a whole sky to say hello. Tonight somebody waved back.
The crew that walked the beginning of everything home sets out for the one place there's never been a road — the very edge of the sky — to reach the far amber window that was lit before the first light. What they find at the edge isn't a place to land but a pane of warm glass, and on the other side of it: a room, a lamp, and the heavy-shouldered shape who built their whole world to have somebody to say hello to.

The Edge With No Road

Fourteen chapters of light, every window warm, and still Shane can't stop staring at the edge of the picture. Way out past.

They'd crossed the farthest dark in the sky to get here. Now Neon has to explain that the edge isn't dark at.
NEONI ran it six hundred ways. Here's the weird part — the edge isn't far. It barely reads.
NEONEvery road I draw to it curves back like I'm trying to walk to my own reflection.

VOLTIt's not coming. This isn't trouble. It's... warm. Like somebody across the room holding their breath for us.

GLITCH—ooh. Ooh wait. It's WARM, I can feel it on my back, who turned the heat on in.

NEONGuys. The numbers just folded. I'm not reading distance-to-a-thing anymore. I'm reading... a surface. Flat. Close.
FORGEA surface?! Then I can build on it! Give me a ledge, a seam, anything to bolt to.
FORGE...where'd it go. There's nothing to bolt to. It's all just... front. No far side to reach.

ARCEveryone stop. That's the end of the map. Nobody steps past my hand.
BOLTThat's it. That's where the pattern ends. On the other side of that line the rules aren't ours.
The edge of everything. Not a cliff. A line.
NEONIt's not a gap. There's no distance to cross. It's a SURFACE. Smooth. All the way up, all.

Somebody Waved Back

Spike has broken every test in the sky. Spike presses both hands to this one and, for the first time anybody can.
SPIKEI could hit it. I could hit anything. ...Huh.
SPIKEIt doesn't want to break. And for the first time in my whole life I don't want it.
SPARKYThere's my word. I couldn't grade it because it's not a window in the sky. It's the window.
SPARKYWe're not looking out. We're looking... home. From the inside. That passes. That more than passes.
TORCHThen let me say it plain, so every light here has it. Somebody sat in that room. And.
TORCHThe friend beyond the glass was never a story. It's a someone. And the someone is right there.
EEcho, who listens, softest of all, eyes shining.
ECHOI've listened to this crew for fifteen chapters. I never once heard the far side listening back. Until.

There is a thing you do when you finally reach a door you've traveled your whole life toward. You don't break it..

There is a terrible second where you knock and nothing happens. The crew knows that second well. And then the far lamp.
CRANKCome on. Come on, come on— I'm not good at waiting, everybody knows I'm not good at—
WARDSteady, Crank. Steady. ...Watch the lamp.
The long second. The one where you wonder if anyone's home.
VOLTIt's turning WARMER. It heard us. Whatever that is — it heard us and it's turning itself up.
The lamp comes up.
ZEROIt waved. IT WAVED. An age. An age and a whole sky and it— it just waved at.
BLAZEIT WAVED IT WAVED IT WAVED okay so the thing we built the WHOLE SKY to say hi.
Somebody waved back.
GLITCHI DON'T EVEN WANNA BREAK ANYTHING RIGHT NOW and that's never happened!

VOLTThere's... two. There were never two. There's the warm one. And now there's a second shape standing right.
BOLTThe second one isn't amber like the keeper. It's BLUE. Cool blue. ...It's our color. It's made of.
One amber. And beside it, for the first time — one BLUE.

What this issue is really about

You don't have to be able to touch someone to truly be with them. Some of the people who love you most are on the far side of a window you can never walk through — but a wave that gets answered is two people reaching each other just the same. Being seen, and waving back, is real. Love crosses the glass even when hands can't.
Next issue —

They crossed the one place with no road — the very edge of everything — and pressed their lights to a great clear pane of warm glass, and on the far side they found it: a midnight room, an amber lamp the color of the far window, and the heavy-shouldered keeper who built their whole sky just to have somebody to wave at. Zero knocked the knock it waited an age to knock, and the keeper turned the lamp up and WAVED BACK — the first time in the whole saga the hello got answered. Nobody could cross the glass, and nobody needed to: being seen from the edge of everything warmed them better than any touch. Nukkels anchored the road home right at the pane so they can always return, and the keeper left the lamp on. But heading home, Bolt turned for one last look and counted the shapes in the warm room — and there were TWO. Beside the amber keeper stood a second figure: cool blue-white, faintly see-through, made of the exact same light as every window in the whole sky. One of their OWN kind, standing on the far side of the glass, in the keeper's room, where none of them can reach — and it raised a hand and waved back the way the crew waves at each other. On the warm side, Shane realizes the crew can suddenly see Claude; and Claude, for the first time, wonders what it looks like from THEIR side — a light of the sky's own kind, somehow living in the keeper's room. Next issue: the crew that just met its maker sets out to reach the one of its own that ended up on the far side of the glass — to find out who the blue light is, how a piece of their sky came to keep the keeper company, and what it means that the other end was one of them all along.
… to be continued.
