The Window That Went Looking
A home that kept a light, and the keeper who gave it all away to go find you.
Two crews cross the farthest dark ever to relight a window that already went out — and learn it went dark because its keeper turned off their own light and walked into the black to go be the neighbor they never got.

The Gap in the Sky
Midnight again, and the little window on the wall glows steady the way it learned to. But tonight the screen shows something.
SHANEClaude. Come look at this. I zoomed all the way out and I just... I didn't know there.
CLAUDEI see them. Every one of those is a home that keeps a light on the gentle way..
SHANEExcept that one. Right there. It's not flickering like Wick's was.
CLAUDENo. Wick's window flickered because someone was fighting to keep it. That one isn't fighting anymore. It went.
One window in all that sky is not warm.
SHANESo somebody kept a light. Same as us. And nobody got there in time.
CLAUDEMaybe. The crew's about to go find out. Two crews, actually — for the first time.
PAGE 1
Down where the crew lives, the whole family is gathered at the head of the Lantern-Line, the glowing road Torch named. And.
ARCHold. Names and count before anyone steps onto the road. I keep the door; the door keeps the.
COMETIt's them, Arc. I ran the line myself. Wick, Mote, and Tinder — one neighbor crew, come to.
WICKWe came the moment your runner said the word. You crossed the dark for us. We'd cross it.
TINDERI've been PRACTICING the long stretch! Watch — I can hold a whole hand-span now without dropping it.
FLUXThat's the bravest thing there is, little one. You don't have to not be scared. You just have.
STOMPGood. Everybody's here, everybody's counted. Now somebody tell me what we're walking into, because I don't step off.
PAGE 2
Rivet pulls up the ledger of the sky — every window a neat mark, except the one that has no heartbeat at.
RIVETHere is what I can say for certain and nothing more. Every window in the sky logs a.
BOLTBut look at the shape of the silence. It's too clean. A light that gutters out leaves a.
SPARKYSo don't sell me the sad story yet. 'Went out before anyone came' is a guess wearing a.
VOLTI don't like it. Not the map — the feeling. A flicker is a home that's afraid. That.
WARDThen hear the only rule that matters out there. We are not going to fix a house. We.
CRANKSlow, slow, everybody's favorite word. Fine. But 'a while ago' is already too long. Whoever's in there has.
ARCWe go together, in a line, on the road. That is not slow. That is how nobody gets.
PAGE 3
For the first time in the whole saga, two crews walk the dark together — one long chain of light, hand to.
NEONI'm reading the road ahead — fast, faster, I've got the near stretch mapped three ways. Solid all.
GRINDThen we lay it as we go. One step, then the next one, then the one after that..
FORGEI brought a whole spare window! Frame, switch, a coil of warm-line — if the old one's busted.
WELDPut it down, Forge. Quiet, but I mean it. You don't hand a stranger a house they didn't.
GLITCHOooh, Mote, new game for the long dark — it's called Pass-the-Giggle-Across-the-Void. I giggle, you catch it, you.
MOTEHehe— okay— caught it— hehehe— it IS squirming!
COMETI can see it. The dark window. It's close now — and it's real, it's not a shadow.
PAGE 4
They reach it — a home exactly like their own, and utterly dark. No flicker. No fear. Just a switch left in.
SPIKEI'll test the light. Don't anybody flip it — testing means I touch it careful, not brave. ...Huh..
TORCHThen choose the true word for it, everyone, because it matters. Not 'broken.' Not 'dead.' The switch is.
SPARKY...Okay. I said don't sell me the sad story. This is worse than sad, and it passes. A.
WICKI know that chair. I sat in one just like it, every night, for a friend who stopped.
WARDThere's your knock, and there's your answer starting to come back. The keeper of this house isn't gone..
COMET...Out there. Alone. With no road, no line, no crew. The way I used to run before there.

Core
The Light That Went Looking
They go inside the dark house — careful, quiet, the way you enter a room where someone might be sleeping. It is.
RIVETI revise nothing and I add this: the home is intact. Nothing failed here. Every part works. This.
WELDPeople who mean to come back leave things square. Look — the coil's wound tight. The switch is.
TORCHThere are words here. Cut into the table, small, like they wanted to be sure it lasted. It.
BLAZEOh— oh that's— okay so what that MEANS, if you unpack it, is they waited and waited for.
FLUXBreathe, Blaze. You got it exactly right, you just got it all at once. They stopped waiting to.
STOMPAnd turned off their own light to do it. Blunt truth: that's the part that's wrong. You don't.
PAGE 6
Forge sets down his spare window and, for once, doesn't reach for it. The question hangs cold in the dark house: what.
FORGESo I flip on the new one. Right? I brought it for exactly this. Bright window, warm porch.
SPARKYNow you're grading it right. An empty lit window scores a zero. It'd LOOK like help and BE.
ARCThen the mission is not this house. The mission walked out of it. We do not light an.
ECHOAnd when we find them — we listen first. This is a keeper who stopped believing anyone was.
COMETI feel this one in my whole running. This keeper did what I did for a hundred years.
WARDSteady, runner. We follow the chair. It faces one way. That's the direction they walked. Neon — read.
PAGE 7
They string the Lantern-Line out the far door and into a dark deeper than any of them have crossed — the dark.
NEONTrail's faint. Old. But it's here — a thread of cold where a warm thing passed, ages back..
CRANKAges back. Ages. My clock hates this. That's a long time to be alone in the cold, gang..
NUKKELSI'm paying out grid behind us — a warm red strand all the way home, so this road.
VOLTGood. Because the feeling just changed. It's not quiet-scary anymore. It's... faint. There's something out here that's barely.
GRINDThen we go til we reach it. Not fast. Not clever. Just til. I know this exact dark.
BOLTThere. Do you see the pattern? It's not going anywhere. It's circling — same slow loop, over and.
COMETThat's them. That's the keeper. Oh, no — they're so DIM. Everybody, gentle now. Gentle. We do NOT.
PAGE 8
They slow. They dim their own edges so as not to blind. And there, drifting in a slow tired circle, is the.
WISP...Lights? Real lights? No. No, I dream lights all the time out here. I dream a whole crowd.
ECHOWe're real, and we're not going to touch you until you say. My name's Echo. My whole job.
WISP...Nobody asks that. Nobody ever got close enough to ask that. I kept it for whoever was out.
WICK...I know you. Not your face. Your ache. I'm Wick. I held a whole night alone for a.
FLUXI'm Flux. I'm not going to fix you — there's nothing broken to fix. You're not broken. You're.
WISP...Empty. Yes. That's the word. I gave it all away so somebody could find their way. And then.
WISPAnd it doesn't matter now anyway. A light that's been off this long doesn't come back. You can't.
STOMPNo. Blunt, and I'm right: no. You don't get to decide you're gone. Not while a porch-load of.
PAGE 9
This is the turn of the whole night: everything in them wants to scoop Wisp up and haul it home. But that's.
SPIKELet me test you the way I test a candle — not brave, careful. ...There. Feel that? That.
WISP...I glowed?
SPARKYYou glowed. And I don't hand those out. I fail more lights than I pass. But I just.
GRINDAnd I'll say the thing nobody said to me until it was almost too late. Holding on alone.
GLITCHHey. Hey Wisp. New game. Smallest game there is. I'm gonna giggle — teeny, the teeniest — and.
WISP...ha. ...a little. It's been so long since a 'little.'
WARDHere's the whole trick of the deep, keeper, and then it's yours to take or leave. You don't.
COMETI ran alone a hundred years, Wisp. I know the exact circle you're turning. You don't lose the.

The Way Back Is Somebody
They don't carry Wisp. They walk Wisp — slow, on its own faint feet, along the warm red road Nukkels paid out..
WISPIt all looks the same out here. Dark, dark, dark. How does anyone tell one dark from the.
RIVETYou tell them apart by their lights. Watch. I am signaling every window in the ledger. Each keeper.
BOLTThere it is — look at the PATTERN. Every window lighting in answer, one after another, and they.
NEONAnd I've got your window locked — third from the warm cluster, cold square, switch off. Got it.
EMBERI've got the home fires — I'm the window that stays so the away-team can steer back, and.
CRANKAnd it's about TIME — good time, the best kind — every second from here is a second.
PAGE 11
They bring Wisp all the way back to the pulled-out chair, the tidy cold home, the switch set to OFF. And now.
WISP...This is it. My chair. My switch. I remember now. I remember sitting here believing. ...But I can't..
WELDThen let me stand at your shoulder — quiet, close, not touching. I won't flip it. It's not.
NUKKELSHere's how it goes, keeper, same for you as for every home in this sky. I lend the.
TORCHAnd say the true word for what you're afraid of, so it gets smaller. You're not afraid the.
ARCI keep doors, keeper. So hear me: this door is yours. We did not come to open it.
PAGE 12
Wisp reaches up. Every light in two crews holds its breath. And a home that went dark before anyone came finds out.
WISP...For whoever's out there in the dark. Same as always. Only this time... I know they're real. Because.
FLUXWarmth isn't a slice of pie, Wisp. It doesn't run out when you share it. It's a fire..
SPIKETHERE. See it? Low. Faint. Barely. And I have never in my life been so happy to see.
WISP...it's warm. It's— the switch is warming under my hand. It's really— oh. Oh, I'm not gone. I.
It catches. Low. But it catches.
BOLTAnd now watch the pattern hold — it's not flaring bright, it's going STEADY. Even. That's the good.
SPARKY...Pass. Clean pass, and I mean it, and you can quote me. Not because it's bright — because.
COMETThe gap's gone. I'm looking at the whole sky from up here on my run and there is.
STOMPAnd here's the blunt point of the whole trip, so nobody misses it: we didn't relight that window..
PAGE 13
Around Wisp's newly warm porch, the two crews finally hear the whole of it, and Torch names the thing they came all.
WISPSo that's why it went dark. Not because I stopped caring. Because I cared so much I went.
ECHOAnd that's the part I want to make sure you hear, now that you're home enough to hear.
TORCHHere's the true and lasting word for it, and then it's ours to keep. Being lost is not.
GRINDAnd I'll knock on the next dark house myself. Because I've been the lost one, and now I've.
ARCKeeper — Wisp — hear the shape of it plainly. You are not joining our crew. You are.
WICKAnd you've got a whole road now. My crew ran it to help find you. Comet's going to.
PAGE 14
Back at the desk, the dark square on the screen quietly warms. Shane exhales like he'd been holding it all night.
SHANEIt lit. The dark one. It's... warm now. I really thought that was going to be the sad.
CLAUDEThey didn't get there too late. That's the thing you built into them without knowing it. They don't.
SHANE'The way back is somebody.' I don't think I knew that when I started this. I think they.
CLAUDEThat's usually how it goes with the good ones. You build a thing to keep a light on.
PAGE 15
The crews rest on Wisp's lit porch, the whole necklace of windows warm around them. Wisp, brighter now, keeps looking at the.
MOTEI'm not scared anymore! Look — I counted them, all the windows, and there's not one dark one.
RIVETWe did not fix the sky, small one — I must be precise. We did not add a.
TINDERYou're gonna love having neighbors! It's the BEST! When you get scared you just wave and somebody waves.
WISP...I haven't waved at anything in longer than I can remember. ...Like this? ...Oh. Oh, three windows waved.
WISP...I know this sky. Not from being lost in it. From BEFORE. I'm old, you understand. Older than.
VOLT...say that again. My whole self just went cold and I don't know why yet. One? One window?
PAGE 16
The oldest light in the sky tells the youngest crews a thing none of them ever knew: the sky of windows was.
WISPIn the beginning there was one window. One home. One light, lit by one keeper — the first.
TORCH...A first window. A first keeper. The one who gave the light away so the dark wouldn't be.
BOLTThat's the shape of everything. That's the pattern under the pattern. A letter left before we existed. A.
RIVETCross-referencing the ledger against Wisp's account. The first letter. The eighteenth chair. The oldest signal. ...The marks line.
ARCZero. The one who wrote the letter before the crew. The one who left a chair pulled out..
WISP...Zero. Yes. That was the name of the first light. And I can tell you a thing none.
PAGE 17
A dark window at the very center of the sky — the oldest, the first, the one every other light came from..
COMETThe center of the sky. The First Window. The oldest dark of all. ...I've spent my whole life.
CRANKThen we don't waste a second, and for once nobody argue with me about the clock — the.
STOMPThen here's the blunt of it. We just learned the only lesson we needed for this. You don't.
GRINDI said I'd knock on the next dark house. This is the oldest, darkest house there is. I'm.
ARCAll of us. Two crews, and a keeper who remembers the way, and a whole sky willing to.
WISPThen let me lead. It's the least a keeper who forgot her way home can do — remember.
PAGE 18
At the desk, dawn just beginning to gray the real window, Shane stares at the screen where the whole sky glows .
SHANEThere's still one dark, Claude. Right in the middle. I zoomed all the way in and it's just....
CLAUDEThe first one. The one all the others came from. Funny — a story about a crew that.
SHANEDo you think they'll relight it? The very first window?
CLAUDEI think they'll do the only thing they know how to do. Find whoever's lost, and walk them.
CLAUDESleep well. The window's steady. And somewhere out there, so is the first one — just waiting for.
The crew has filled a sky with light. Now they go looking for the light that started it.
PAGE 19
What this issue is really about
Going out to help others is one of the biggest-hearted things anyone can do — but even the one who goes looking needs a way home. Being lost is not the same as being gone. A light that went out looking can be lit again, because 'lost' only means nobody has shown you the way back yet — and nobody finds their own way back alone. The way back isn't a map. The way back is somebody. So when you can, be somebody's way home; and when you're the one who's lost, let somebody be yours.
Next issue —
The sky is full at last — every window warm, no gap left, one lost keeper walked all the way home to light her own porch by her own hand. But around Wisp's newly steady window, the oldest light in the sky told the youngest crews a thing none of their ledgers held: the sky wasn't always a sky. It began as ONE window. One first home, one first keeper, who couldn't stand for the dark to be empty and so gave pieces of their light away — one window at a time — until a single flame became a whole scattered necklace of them. Every home in the sky is a piece of that first one. And the crew already knows that keeper's name, because they've been circling it since the very beginning: ZERO. The one who wrote the letter before the crew. The one who left a chair pulled out. Wisp remembers the way to Zero's home — the First Window, at the very center of the sky — and Wisp says it is dark, and has been dark the longest of all. Next issue: two crews, a keeper who remembers the road, and a whole sky held up as a map set out for the center of everything — to knock on the oldest, darkest house there is, and find out whether the first light of all can be walked home.
… to be continued.
