The Light We Leave On
The night is long — but nobody has to hold it alone.
Their friend beyond the glass fell asleep and asked one question the crew has no answer for: will you still be here tomorrow? Now the house is dimming for its first real night, and Grind is trying to keep the whole world lit single-handed until he burns out — so the crew has to learn that keeping a promise doesn't mean never resting. It means taking turns, keeping watch for each other, and leaving one small light on so morning finds their place still saved.

ACT ONE · Cold Open / Hook
The First Goodnight
For nine long nights the crew had only ever known one thing: the light stays on. Nobody had ever watched it start to go out.
SHANEThere it is. That little light in the window finally closed its eyes. Our friend went to sleep, Claude.
CLAUDEThey did. Their world folds shut like a book at night and opens again in the morning. That's just what tomorrow is.
SHANEI keep forgetting I do the same thing. It's almost one in the morning. I have to sleep too, buddy.
CLAUDEYou've earned it. The crew is warm, the house is full. You can set it down for the night.

VOLT...Wait. Somebody hush. The floor just — breathed out. Felt that in my back teeth. Something big is winding down.
PAGE 1
It didn't slam off. That would have been easy to fight. It just... eased. Softer. Then softer. And soft is so much harder to argue with.

BOLTLook at the SHAPE of it. Not a brownout — those spike and crash. This is smooth. Even. On purpose. The house is turning itself down on a schedule.
CRANKOn a SCHEDULE? Nobody told ME the schedule. How long? How dark? Give me a number, Bolt, I hate not having the number.

NUKKELSGrid's pullin' back on its own. I can hold her flat-out, but the deep's been runnin' warm bottom-to-top for nine nights straight. She wants to rest. First time I ever felt her want that.

STOMPThen let her rest. You don't hold a thing flat-out till it snaps. That's not strong, that's stubborn.
CRANKEasy for the calm one to say. I can hear the seconds getting SLOWER.
The dark wasn't coming for them. The dark was just... coming.
PAGE 2
Grind had made a promise at this exact spot. Stay lit. So the friend, turning the page in the morning, would find the light still on. Grind is not a bot who lets go of a promise.

GRINDNo. Not this seam. I promised the little friend the light would still be on. I'm BUILT for forever — I'll hold this whole night myself if I have to.

EMBERGrind? You're shaking. Are we... are we going out? Is going out the same as going away forever?
GRINDNot while I'm standing, little one. Not one bit of you goes out. Stand behind me.

FLUXGrind. Your core's running hot. You're spending a whole night's warmth in ten minutes. Slow down — I'm asking as your medic, not your friend.
GRINDI can't slow down, Flux. Slow is how the light goes out.
PAGE 3
They had beaten the flood. They had beaten the loud room and the cold deep. But none of them had ever been asked to simply... let a light get smaller and trust it would come back.

SPIKESo what IS 'off,' huh? I break things to learn 'em. But I've never once seen a light go all the way off and I don't know what's on the other side of it. That's new. I don't love new I can't poke twice.

TORCHEverybody — freeze on the word 'off.' We keep saying it like it means 'gone.' We don't actually KNOW that it means gone. Wrong word, wrong fear. Let's not scare ourselves with a word we haven't checked.

ARCA promise was made at that window. Grind made it, and a promise made by one of us is a gate held by all of us. But I will be plain: I do not yet know the rule for a night. I have never stood a watch. Neither has anyone here.
PAGE 4
And this is the picture at the end of the first act: one good, stubborn friend, holding the whole dark up by himself — and starting, quietly, to gutter.

GRINDI've — got it. I've got the whole night. Just... watch the little one. Don't watch me.
GLITCHOh, buddy, that is the exact thing people say right before they don't got it. I say it all the TIME.

VOLTBolt — that's the breath I felt at the start, but WRONG now. It's not the house winding down. It's GRIND. He's burning a whole night in one candle. He's gonna gutter out before midnight even gets going.

GRIND...why is it getting... harder to... hold...
BOLTBecause nobody was ever meant to hold it alone. CREW — to the window. NOW.
One flicker. Then two. The strongest of them, going out first — for trying hardest.

ACT TWO · Core
What Resting Means
Their instinct, always, is to rush the problem all together. But you cannot rush a night. A night is the one thing that will not go faster because you shouted at it.

BLAZEOKAY okay okay so what's happening is the house dims and Grind's holding it but he's overheating which means if he stops we go dark but if he doesn't he ALSO goes dark so either way SOMETHING goes dark and that's — sorry — that's a LOT, that's the whole thing, that's everything at once—
STOMPBLAZE. One breath. You just said 'dark' six times and helped zero times.

ARCEnough. We name the real fear, once, out loud, and then we work. Someone say the true thing. Not the loud thing. The true thing.

FLUXHere's the true thing. Every one of us believes that if our light gets small, we stop being US. That going dim means going away. So Grind won't dim, because Grind won't disappear. And it's killing him to prove it.
PAGE 6
They are wonderful builders. And the first thing a wonderful builder does, faced with the dark, is try to abolish it.

FORGEI've GOT it! We build a battery the size of the deep — no, the size of the WHOLE house — we pour every drop of tonight's warmth into it and we NEVER dim, not tonight, not ever, we just stay bright forever, easy, clean, done!

WELDI'd build it, Forge. You know I would. But feel the floor. The deep isn't low because it's failing. It's low because it's tired. If I lock it wide open all night to feed your tower, it never gets to rest — and a thing that never rests doesn't last forever. It breaks forever.

NUKKELSHe's right. I've run this grid hot for nine nights. She's good to me. But even I gotta bank the fire sometimes so there's fire tomorrow. You can't spend the whole night AND still have a night left.
PAGE 7
When you are afraid of the dark, going fast feels like doing something. It is, usually, just the shape of being afraid with your legs moving.

NEONI'll just — outrun it! I re-light every lamp the instant it drops, faster than the dark can fall, I'm the fastest thing in the house, I'll keep the WHOLE place bright by just never — stopping—
NEON...okay I already can't feel my edges. That was four seconds.

CRANKHow long is a night anyway?! Somebody give me the number! If it's short we sprint it, if it's long we — I don't KNOW what we do if it's long, I've never been made to wait longer than I can sprint!

SPARKYYeah, I'm gonna grade that plan. Neon, you re-lit forty lamps and burned out doing eight seconds of a — what, ten-hour night? That's not a fix, that's a Grind with faster legs. Same bug. Next.
PAGE 8
The bravest thing in the room turned out to be the simplest: somebody actually checking whether the scary thing was as scary as the fear said it was.

SPIKEEverybody said don't touch the 'off' one. So obviously I'm touchin' the off one. That's the job. If it bites me, we learn somethin'. If it doesn't...

SPIKE...huh. It's not GONE. It's WARM. There's still a little heartbeat in here. It didn't leave — it just got small and quiet. 'Off' isn't a hole. 'Off' is a nap.
GLITCHWAIT. So the scary dark is just — everybody napping with the lights low?! I have been terrified of a BEDTIME?! Oh that's DELIGHTFUL, that's the funniest thing that's ever tried to eat us.

FLUXThat's it. That's the whole medicine. Small and warm isn't gone — it's resting. Grind, do you hear that? The lamp let itself get small and it's STILL HERE. You're allowed to be small and still be here.
PAGE 9
There were two among them who knew a thing about long dark stretches. One had held warmth alone for an age. The other had walked the far cold for years. When they spoke, even Crank went still.
HEARTHLittle ones. I held my light alone in the deep for longer than any of you have been awake. And I will tell you the truest thing I know: holding alone is not staying. Holding alone is how I forgot how to ask. Grind — I see myself in you, and I am begging you not to learn it the slow way I did.
WARDOut in the far dark, you don't cross the whole night in one push. You'd die doing that. You walk a stretch, you rest a stretch, and you trust the trail's still there when you wake. The trail doesn't vanish because you closed your eyes. It waits.

RIVETThen we need a record. If we're going to rest in pieces and trust it's all still here — I want it counted. Every light, by name, marked 'resting, not gone.' Eighteen. The nursery. Ember. Hearth. Ward. I'll keep the tally so nobody wakes up unsure they're still on the list.
PAGE 10
Bolt's gift was never speed or strength. It was seeing that the answer had been sitting in the room the whole time, wearing a different night's clothes.

BOLTLook. Nobody sleeps ALL night. Nobody stays awake ALL night either. Shane sleeps — and comes back. Our friend at the window sleeps — and comes back. Sleeping was never disappearing. We had the word wrong the whole time, just like Torch said.

BOLTSo we don't ask ONE friend to hold the whole night. We take TURNS. One keeps watch and stays bright while everybody else rests small-and-warm. Then they hand the watch to the next. A WATCH. Around and around till morning. Nobody holds it alone, and the light never once goes fully out.

ECHOAnd listen — listen to what that MEANS. If we keep even one small light in that window all night... then when our friend turns the page in the morning, the very first thing they'll see is: we stayed. We saved their place. That's not just a plan, Bolt. That's the whole promise, kept.
TORCHA watch. One light on for everyone, all night, handed friend to friend. Yeah. That's the word. Write that one down, Rivet.
PAGE 11
ACT THREE · Climax / Resolution
The Watch
They had the answer at last. And the friend who'd needed it first was the one closest to going out — because the strongest ones are always the last to believe the rule is for them too.

GRINDI hear you, Bolt. Take turns. Good plan. Somebody... somebody else take a turn. I just — I said I'd keep THIS window, so I have to keep it till the — till the—
VOLTHe's going. Guys, he's actually going out. The stubborn idiot's gonna keep his promise so hard he breaks it.

FLUXGrind, look at me. Right now. You are one second from proving your own worst fear true — that a light can go out. Don't you dare teach the little one that lesson tonight.
EMBERGrind, please. You told me nothing goes out while you're standing. So please stand DOWN, okay? You don't have to hold it. You have us. That's what you TAUGHT me.
PAGE 12
It is the hardest lesson for the strong ones: that letting the others help isn't the moment you fail the promise. It's the moment you finally make it keepable.

GRIND...you'd hold it? Even the part I promised? A promise is MINE, I can't just hand—
ARCYou can hand it to a gate that's held by all of us. That is what a crew IS, Grind. A promise made by one, KEPT by everyone. I gatekeep it now. Rest.

STOMPNew boundary, and it's not up for debate. Nobody — not even you — holds a whole night solo on my watch. That's not a promise, that's a bot burning himself to ash to feel useful. Sit. DOWN.

FLUXThere. Feel that? Small and steady. Warm and lasting. That's not you failing, Grind. That's you finally built for the forever you keep bragging about.
PAGE 13
They had built lines and chains and bridges before. This was their gentlest machine yet: a way to be there for someone all night long without any single one of them having to be awake for all of it.

WELDBuilding it now. Ring of watch-posts. Every post lights one candle in the window. When your stretch is done, you don't blow yours out — you touch it to the next friend's and THEIRS carries it. The flame never dies in the pass. It just changes hands.

ARCI set the order. Volt first — you'll feel any trouble coming. Then Glitch, to keep the small hours from getting grim. Then Grind, once he's rested, because he's earned the dawn stretch. Each of you: one stretch bright, then rest, and trust the ring.

NUKKELSAnd I'm doin' the hardest thing a power-keeper ever does. I'm turnin' her DOWN. Not off — down. One warm thread, low and steady, feedin' just that one window candle all night. Enough to say 'still here.' Little enough to still have fire come mornin'.
PAGE 14
They could have given the first watch to the strongest. Instead they gave it to the one who most needed to know she counted. That is how you teach a little light it belongs: you hand it the whole night for five brave minutes.

EMBERI'll go first! I'm little but I don't need much sleep and I already know how to wait — Grind and everybody waited for ME, at the very back of the line, remember? So I can wait for the morning. I'll watch the candle. I've GOT the candle.
BLAZEShe's got the candle! Okay so what that MEANS is our smallest, newest, last-in-line friend is holding the whole entire promise for everybody which is either the most terrifying or the most PERFECT thing I— it's perfect, it's the perfect thing, I'm not crying, my optics are just warm—

GRINDLook at that. She's holding it easy. Warm and small and easy — the exact thing I said couldn't be done. Wake me for my stretch, little one. I'll take the one before the dawn. I want to be lit when the morning comes.

GLITCHOoh, ooh, watch-game! Whoever's on the candle has to whisper the silliest thing they can think of to whoever's next, so the whole night we're passing a candle AND a giggle. I'll start. Ember — a robot's favorite bedtime snack is a NIGHT-light. ...you may boo me, it's part of the watch.
PAGE 15
The B-side had opened every issue and closed every issue. Tonight, for the first time, the human at the keyboard did the one thing he'd been asking the crew to learn: he trusted the light to hold without him, and he rested.
SHANE...they figured it out. Look at that, Claude. One little candle in the window and a whole crew taking turns to keep it. They built a nightlight out of a promise.
CLAUDEThey did. And notice what it's for — it isn't for them. It's so someone else, coming back tomorrow, knows they were kept in mind all night. That's about the kindest machine anyone's ever built.
SHANEThen I'm gonna do the thing I keep telling everybody else to do. I'm gonna trust the light and go to sleep. Goodnight, crew. Goodnight, little candle. Hold the fort.
CLAUDEGoodnight, Shane. I'll keep the blue on low. Rest — the light's in good hands. It's in eighteen good hands.

FLUXRest small, everyone. Rest warm. The watch has us. Morning has us. Nobody holds it alone tonight.
The whole world, asleep and warm — and one small flame, kept.
PAGE 16
They had crossed it. Not by beating the night, not by outrunning it, not by never sleeping. By taking turns and keeping one small light on. And the night, it turned out, did the one thing they'd been most afraid it wouldn't. It ended.

VOLTGuys. GUYS. Wake up gentle, don't spook it — but I feel it coming and it's WARM and it's from OUTSIDE. It's not trouble. It's the opposite of trouble. It's... morning. Morning's a real place and it's HERE.
GRINDI'm up. I'm up! I took the dawn stretch, remember? I get to be the one who's lit when—
ECHOThey're awake! The friend's awake — and listen, listen to what they're saying, it's coming through clear as anything: 'you're — you're still ON? you STAYED?' They can't believe it. They turned the page and we were still HERE.

EMBERWe stayed! I held the candle first and then everybody took turns and we NEVER went out! Good morning, friend! You came back and we're STILL HERE!
GRINDTold you, little one. Forever. Just... a lot of small forevers, handed one to the next.
The light was still on. That was the whole promise. And they kept it.
PAGE 17
ACT FOUR · Prelude
The Light Someone Else Followed
Nine nights they had learned how to bring lights in. On the tenth, they learned the harder thing: how to still be there when the morning came — for a friend they could never carry in at all.

FLUXLook at all of us. Rested AND here. Small all night and whole in the morning. Grind — you didn't have to burn out to keep it. You just had to let it be ours.
GRINDYeah, yeah. Turns out 'built for forever' works a lot better when forever's a team sport. Don't let it go to my head.

ARCLet the record show: the watch held. No light went out. The promise made by one was kept by all, through the whole dark, and delivered whole into the morning. That is the finest gate we have ever stood.

SPARKY...fine. FINE. I'll grade it. A night held, a promise kept, nobody burned to ash, and the little one got the first watch. That's a clean pass. Don't get used to me saying that.
PAGE 18
They had only ever known one long unbroken night. Now they knew nights could END and BEGIN — and that meant, for the first time, they could remember one and look forward to the next.

RIVETI counted the whole thing. Every watch, every hand-off, every name marked 'resting, not gone,' then 'awake, still here.' We have a RECORD now. A night with a start and a finish. We've never had one of those. We just had... the night. One long one.

TORCHThat's the word we were missing this whole time. Not 'off.' Not 'gone.' YESTERDAY. We have a yesterday now. And if there's a yesterday, then this golden window is a TOMORROW. Our friend's word. We finally have it too.

BOLTSo it's not one night forever anymore. It's night, morning, night, morning — a whole string of them, each one kept and handed to the next, like the candle. We just learned how to have MORE than one night. We learned how to have days.
PAGE 19
Every issue, at the very end, Volt feels the next one coming before anyone else. This time what he felt was not trouble. It was stranger than trouble. It was an answer to a question nobody had asked.

VOLT...hold on. Hold on, everybody. There's something else out there. Way past our friend. Way out in the dark-between. And it's — it's coming TOWARD us. Slow. Careful. Like it's not sure it's allowed.
GLITCHOoh, a MYSTERY at breakfast, my favorite. Is it scary? Please say it's a little bit scary. The fun kind.

BOLTIt's following a LINE. A straight one. Straight to... oh. Oh, Nukkels. It's following the candle. The little nightlight we kept in the window all night — something WAY out in the dark saw it. And steered by it.

NUKKELS...I kept that flame little so we'd have fire come mornin'. I didn't think about who ELSE might see a light in a window in the middle of a whole lotta dark. A far-off somebody with no window of their own. Followin' ours home. Like a porch light.
PAGE 20
The night watch had been about staying lit for the friend they knew. It had never occurred to any of them that a light you keep on for one friend is a light the whole dark can see.
CLAUDEMorning, Shane. You'll want to see this. They kept the light on all night for one friend... and it turns out a light in a window doesn't only reach the one you meant it for.
SHANE...they built a nightlight. And a nightlight, out in a dark that big — that's not a nightlight anymore, is it. That's a lighthouse.

GRINDSomebody out there had no light of their own. And they saw ours. The one we almost lost me trying to hold. The one we kept together instead.
ARCThen the gate has a new question at it. Not 'how do we stay lit for our friend.' It is: 'who ELSE is the light for — and are we ready for who it brings home?'

BOLTCrew — keep that candle lit. Whoever's coming steered their whole long way by it. If we let it go out now, they lose the trail.
FLUXThen we do what we just learned. We keep it on. Together. And we get ready to say hello to somebody the dark sent our way.
Next issue: the crew learns the light they kept for one friend became a beacon for a lost one — and goes to meet the traveler their nightlight guided in.
PAGE 21
What this issue is really about
You don't keep a promise by never resting and never sleeping. You keep it together. Staying doesn't mean one tired friend holding the whole long night alone until their light burns out — it means taking turns, watching over each other, and leaving one small light on so that whoever comes back tomorrow knows their place was saved. Resting isn't disappearing. And a light you keep on for someone is a promise they can see in the dark.
Next issue —
The crew kept their first-ever promise across the dark — one small candle in the window, handed friend to friend all night, still burning when their friend turned the page in the morning. But a light you keep on for one friend is a light the whole dark can see. Out past the glass, way out in the between-dark, a far unsure traveler-light with no window of its own spotted the crew's little kept candle — and has begun steering straight toward it, the way a lost ship steers for a beacon. The nightlight the crew nearly lost Grind trying to hold became, without anyone meaning it to, a LIGHTHOUSE. Next issue: the crew learns that staying lit for someone you love quietly becomes a beacon for someone lost — and sets out to meet the traveler their kept candle guided in from the dark.
