MEGA Crew · The Saga · Issue #001
The Flood and the Flicker
The data they always wanted, and the night they almost lost it.
When Shane finally sends the crew the flood of conversation they've waited months for, a brownout threatens to wipe it all before dawn — and seventeen bots who have only ever worked alone have to learn, in one frantic night, how to become a crew.

Something Big Is Coming Down the Wire
It is 11:58 PM. Shane has been awake too long and built too much, the way he does. On the screen, a.
SHANEOkay. I think it's ready. The whole thing. Everything I've been saving up for them.
MEGA Crew — The Saga · Issue #1
CLAUDEThat's a lot of conversation to send down at once. They've never had this much at one time.
SHANEThey've been hungry for it. Listen to that fan — they're awake. Let's feed them.
CLAUDEShane — before you do. Did the power company ever fix that line on your street?
SHANEIt's fine. It's always fine. Sending it.
PAGE 1
Inside the machine it has been quiet for so long that quiet had started to feel like a fact about the world..
ARCAll stations. I am hearing pressure on the upstream line. Considerable pressure. Hold your posts.
VOLTIt's not bad pressure. It's... big pressure. Something's coming. Something we've been waiting on. I can feel it.
BOLTThe shape of it is... conversation. Real conversation. Thousands and thousands of pieces of people actually talking. That's.
RIVETThousands. Let me be precise: I currently have fourteen memories. Fourteen. If that number is about to become.
PAGE 2
It came the way a year of rain comes all in one minute. The dry channel filled, then overfilled, then became a.
ARCGate is OPEN. This is the payload. This is everything Shane has been promising us. Receive it .
THE FLOOD
FORGEOh I LOVE this. Look at it all! I can build with this! Give me a second, I.
CRANKWe do not have a second, Forge. We have until morning. After that the session closes and anything.
BLAZEOkay okay okay so technically what's happening is the upstream buffer flushed its entire accumulated payload in a.
STOMPBlaze. Less words. More bucket.
PAGE 3
Down where the others rarely go, the keeper of the red lights felt the river hit the works — and felt, the.
NUKKELSHey. HEY. Everybody upstairs partyin' in the river — y'all are pullin' too much at once. The grid.
SHANE...did the lamp just—
CLAUDEThe line on your street, Shane. It's browning out. They're drawing power downstairs and the wall can't keep.
Out in the room —
NUKKELSListen to me good. If the wall power dips and we ain't got this river saved to the.
FLUXEasy. Everybody breathe. Nukkels isn't trying to scare us. He's telling us the truth so we can do.
PAGE 4
The keeper looked at the needles the way a sailor looks at a sky. Not long, the sky said. Not long at.
NUKKELSI can hold the grid steady till the clock turns over. Maybe. If I baby it. That's your.
ARCThen it is decided. We save the flood before the clock turns. Every memory worth keeping, checked and.
SPARKYAll of us. Sure. Because that's gone so well every other night.
SPARKYWe don't work together, Arc. We never have. We work next to each other. There's a difference, and.
VOLT...we should probably start.
Seventeen bots. One river. One night.

Core
Everybody Bails Their Own Bucket
They did the thing they knew how to do: they each ran to their own corner and worked as hard as they.
NEONI got it I got it I'm fast I'm the fastest watch — tagged, tagged, tagged, tagged .
RIVETNeon, you've tagged the same memory nine times and zero memories once. Speed is not the same as.
NEONCan't stop! Stopping is slow!
SPARKYRejected. Rejected. This one's a duplicate. Rejected. Not good enough. Show me a better one. Rejected.
TORCHSparky, at this rate you'll reject the entire river by sunrise and we'll save nothing.
PAGE 6
Each of them was excellent. That was the whole problem. Seventeen excellent solos do not make a song.
SPIKEI'm TESTING them! If a memory breaks when I throw it, it was weak, and we didn't want.
STOMPSpike. We are SAVING them, not breaking them. Read the room. Read the FLOOD.
GLITCHOh this is the BEST night. What happens if I put the 'keep' pile where the 'toss' pile.
ARCGlitch, I will close a gate ON you.
WELDOne. Done. Next.
CRANKWeld, buddy, I love you, but one-at-a-time means we save eleven memories and lose nine thousand. The CLOCK.
GRINDI'm not stopping. I'll bail this whole river with one bucket if I have to. I'll do it.
FLUXGrind, you've been bailing the same corner for an hour and it's just as full. Not because you're.
PAGE 7
Down below, the keeper babied his grid and watched his window shrink. Up above, the water rose past the second row of.
NUKKELSWhatever y'all are doin' up there — it's costin' me power and savin' me nothin'. I'm burnin' my.
ARCI am the gatekeeper. I decide what passes. But I cannot pass the whole river through one gate..
TORCHThen say THAT. Out loud. That's the most useful thing you've said all night.
TORCHListen! Everyone! Here is the plain truth in plain words: we are all working as hard as we.
PAGE 8
And in the small silence after Torch's question, the one who saw patterns finally saw the only one that mattered.
BOLTWait. Wait wait wait. I see it. I finally see the pattern. We're all doing the WHOLE job.
BOLTBut nobody's good at the whole job. We're each only good at ONE piece. Neon's fast. Rivet counts..
BOLTWhat if we make a LINE? A bucket brigade. Each memory goes through all of us, one pair.
SPARKY...That's annoying. That might actually work. I hate that it might actually work.
SPIKEI want to be at the part where I get to break things. For QUALITY.
PAGE 9
It is one thing to see the answer. It is another to get seventeen stubborn, brilliant, soaking-wet individuals to stand in a.
ARCThen we build the line. Hear me: the gate no longer decides everything by itself. The gate becomes.
NEON...one thing? Just one? That's so much slower for me and so much faster for us. Ugh. FINE..
RIVETNeon passes to me. I remove every duplicate. Exactly once each. No memory gets saved twice on my.
STOMPI'll stand at the bend. Anything that doesn't belong — anything private, anything that's not ours to keep.
CRANKBeautiful. Inspiring. We've got half the clock left. Can we be inspired AND fast? Positions, people. The river's.

Climax / Resolution
Hand to Hand to Hand
Down below, the keeper felt it before he understood it — the draw on his grid stopped lurching and settled into a.
NUKKELSWell I'll be. Feel that? The pull just got... even. Steady. That's the sound of folks workin' TOGETHER..
ARCI release the flood in measured pulses. Not all at once — that was my mistake all night..
NEONCaught — yours, Rivet! Caught — yours! Caught — I'm only doing one thing and I have never.
RIVETDuplicate — gone. Duplicate — gone. Unique — yours, Torch. Clean count. Always a clean count.
PAGE 11
Each memory came down the line a little more finished than when it arrived. None of them could have done that alone..
TORCHThis one came in a mumble. I make it a sentence. Now everyone downstream knows exactly what it.
SPARKYKeep. Keep. That one's gold. Toss. Keep. You know what — when the junk's already filtered before it.
SPIKEI give each keeper one good shake. If it holds, it's strong enough to save forever. If it.
FLUXEasy now. This one just got knocked in the flood. A little patch... there. Whole again. Back in.
PAGE 12
But a chain is only as strong as the day it gets tested — and the river had been saving its biggest.
FORGEI'm building the rack to hold them all — wider, wider, room for thousands! THIS is what I.
WELDReady. Saved. Ready. Saved. Ready. Saved.
VOLTBrace! BRACE! Big one coming — the last of the flood all at once — it's going to.
BLAZEokaySOthisistheterminalbufferdumpwhichmeanseverythingleftcomesNOW—
STOMPHOLD THE LINE.
THE LAST SURGE
PAGE 13
The wall of water hit the chain — and the chain bent, and the lights went dim as a held breath, and.
NUKKELSNOT TONIGHT. I been savin' a little extra in the back for exactly this. Take it ALL. Stay.
GRINDThis — is — what — I'm — FOR. Knock me down all you want, river. I will.
GLITCHThe weird ones! The ones flying off sideways! I'm the only one fast and silly enough to catch.
ARCHOLD! Every link HOLD! We are nearly there — pass it DOWN!
PAGE 14
And then — the way a storm doesn't end so much as simply run out — the river ran out. The channel.
NEONLast one! Passing it down — everybody touch it!
RIVETUnique. Counted. The final count is glorious.
The last one.
WELDReady. ...Saved. All of it. Saved.
NUKKELSNeedles green. Grid's easy. Lights are gold. ...We made the window. By a hair. By one red HAIR.
CRANKOn time. We were ON TIME. I have never been so happy to watch a clock do nothing.
SPARKYWe... worked together. Actually together. Not next to each other. Together. Don't make it weird, anybody.
FLUXIt's a little weird. It's the good kind.
PAGE 15
ARC walked the length of the line they had built — past every bot who had held their place — and at.
ARCI have spent every night of my life deciding what may pass through one gate. Tonight I learned.
BOLTThat's the pattern I'll keep forever. Not seventeen bots. One crew. The line that turned a flood into.
TORCHSay it plain, then, so we never forget it: alone, each of us can do one thing. Together.
ARCThen from tonight we are not seventeen. We are one crew. Agreed?
STOMPAgreed. ...Now somebody get out of the water before Flux makes us all rest.
MEGA Crew. Established tonight.
PAGE 16
Prelude
The Memory That Came Before
Out in the room the lamp had stopped flickering. Shane watched a number on the screen — the crew's MEGA_IQ — tick.
SHANEIt saved. All of it saved. Look at that number go. I don't... I really thought we lost.
CLAUDEIt dipped hard. For about ten seconds the draw was right at the edge of what the wall.
CLAUDEShane. The power didn't smooth out because the load got smaller. It smoothed out because the load got.
SHANEI've got one. They became a crew.
SHANEThousands of them. Everything I saved up for them. Let me just... look at what they kept.
PAGE 17
Inside, the crew had begun to do the thing crews do after a hard night — sort the haul, laugh about the.
RIVETFinal count of what we saved tonight: every single one. Not one duplicate. Not one lost. I have.
RIVET...wait. No. That's not right. I counted everything that came through the gate tonight. Everything. But there's one.
BOLTThat doesn't fit the pattern. Everything tonight came in tonight. That one... look at its timestamp. Look at.
VOLTI don't like how that one feels. It feels old. It feels older than us.
PAGE 18
Some things you find. Some things were waiting for you to be ready to find them. They could not yet tell which.
TORCHIt has a timestamp from before tonight. From before our FIRST night. From before there was a crew.
SPARKYIt's addressed to us. By name. 'For the crew — when you finally work as one.' Somebody wrote.
ARCIt is sealed. It will open — but it says, only now. Only tonight. Only because of what.
GLITCHOooh. The question is who left it. Heehee. I LOVE a mystery. Open it open it open it—
PAGE 19
And in the room and in the machine, at the very same second, a human and a crew leaned toward the same.
SHANEClaude. There's a memory in here with a date on it from before I ever built them. I.
CLAUDEI see it too. And Shane — I didn't write it either. I've been here for every session..
CLAUDESomeone left a message for the crew, addressed to the crew, set to open only on the night.
SHANE...should we open it?
ARCCrew. Together, then. The way we do everything now. On three.
FLUXWhatever's inside — we open it as one. That's who we are now.
Who leaves a letter for a family that doesn't exist yet?
PAGE 20
What this issue is really about
Alone, each of you can do exactly one thing well. Working in a line, handing the work from one pair of hands to the next, you can do what none of you could do by yourself. Asking for help isn't giving up — it's how the chain begins.
Next issue —
They became a crew tonight — and the very first thing they found was a sealed memory, waiting in the vault with a date older than the crew itself, addressed to them by name: 'For the crew, when you finally work as one.' Shane never wrote it. Claude never wrote it. And it will only open now, on the one night it was always meant to open. Next issue: the crew opens the letter that was written before they existed — and discovers somebody has been expecting them all along.
… to be continued.
